What to Know:

Compared to many restaurant cuisines, sushi has few pitfalls. When they do appear, most are glaringly obvious, like crispy tempura dripping with oil. Here's how to be true to the tradition, and your goals.

Avoid "spicy"
When you see "spicy" on a sushi roll, it's code for mayonnaise laced with hot sauce or chili oil. This orange sauce may be drizzled across the top of the roll or hidden inside. Either way, it can add about 4 PersonalPoints values to the meal. Plus, the spicy rolls with chopped-up fish are where the restaurant disposes of less desirable cuts.

Eat your vegetables
Whether you adore the flavor of raw fish or are still getting used to the idea, it's worth remembering that sushi also includes vegetarian rolls such as avocado rolls (one serving is about 8 PersonalPoints) and cucumber rolls (about 3 PersonalPoints).

Spell crab with a "K"
Most imitation crab (or "krab") in the United States is composed of 50-percent-or-more Alaskan pollack, making it a fairly sustainable choice of seafood. With additions of egg white, oil, salt, starch, and spice, it's clearly a processed food and not as beneficial as raw tuna or salmon. However, for many diners, the cooked consistency, lower price, and modest calories of surimi sticks make them the perfect core for a California roll, which typically have a few PersonalPoints in each.

Go brown
Sushi rolls and nigiri sushi rely on rice to fill you up. Most sushi bars now offer brown rice as an option. You'll get all the fiber and B vitamins you're missing with white rice, and you'll feel full quicker. On some plans, brown rice is a ZeroPoint™ food.

Watch the hibachi
But don't order from it. They have that squirt bottle of oil, and often use more than necessary because it makes it easier to cook and improves the display.

Clear your sinuses
In addition to soy sauce, nigiri sushi and sushi rolls are usually served with pickled ginger and wasabi, a green horseradish paste. The lemony heat of ginger and the fiery rush of the horseradish act as contrasts to the delicate sushi and serve to clear your palate. Purists refrain from adding wasabi to their sushi, preferring to leave it in the hands of the sushi chef, but if you crave the rush, both of these bold flavors pack about 1 PersonalPoint value.

What to Eat:

According to Shuji Hiyakawa, executive chef for Philadelphia-area Kome restaurant and a protégé of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, the beauty of sushi lies in the simplicity of preparation. "Nigiri sushi is just seaweed, rice and fish. There is no fat, just a focus on freshness," he says.

That's great news for health-conscious diners, according to Diane Henderiks, RD, personal chef and culinary nutritionist at DishWithDiane.com . "With sushi, there are very few surprises. There are rarely sauces or oil that have hidden calories, so what you see on your plate is what you are getting," she says.

Appetizers Edamame

Appetizers Edamame

Whole, steamed pods of soybeans make a tasty and nutritious way to kick off your meal. And ½ cup of shelled edamame may be a ZeroPoint food or contain 2 PersonalPoints. "Any time you can get a plant-based protein, go for it," says Henderiks. "These are an even better choice than a salad because you are getting the right balance of protein and carbs to fill you up at the beginning of the meal."

Miso soup

Miso soup

This traditional Japanese soup is not to be missed. Cubes of tofu and seaweed add some substance to this flavorful broth, for 2 PersonalPoints per 1-cup serving. "When you see clear soup, you know it's OK," says Henderiks. "There is some sodium here, but with the potassium, minerals and flavor, there are so many saving graces, it's totally worth it!"

Cha soba noodle salad

Cha soba noodle salad
Noodles generally spell bad news, but Japanese soba is a rare breed made from buckwheat, which has no relation to actual wheat. Soba noodles are gluten-free and lighter in density and calories. A typical 1-cup portion has about 3 PersonalPoints value.

Agedashi tofu

Agedashi tofu
In this traditional dish, a breading of potato or cornstarch prepares it for the fryer, where it gets a crisp exterior before a sprinkling of flavorful bonito (fish) flakes and dashi. "This is a good way to introduce someone to tofu, because the taste and the flavor are really fantastic," says Henderiks. Because it is fried, assume a higher PersonalPoints value for a typical 5-ounce serving. Lighten it up: Usually served in small cubes, this app is primed for sharing. Ask the chef to cube it into enough pieces so everyone gets a taste. A typical piece is 4 PersonalPoints.

Mains

Sashimi

Sashimi
"This is clearly one of the best things you can eat. You almost can't get any healthier," says Henderiks. (However, without the benefit of a rice buffer, some diners find sashimi a difficult food.) If not a ZeroPoint food on your plan, 4 pieces of salmon sashimi are about 7 PersonalPoints.

Sushi

Sushi
Take that sashimi and place it on a little pillow of rice and you have nigiri sushi, the stuff most of us picture when we think "sushi bar." The rice is gently flavored with vinegar, and each piece of sushi should amount to a single bite, according to Hiyakawa. That rice will add PersonalPoints values to the bottom line.

Rolls

Spicy tuna roll

Spicy tuna roll
Also called maki sushi, rolls are the sandwiches of the sushi bar. They double up on the rice to fill you up, and they layer ingredients, like yellowtail fish and scallions, bound together with a sheet of nori (seaweed). Spicy tuna roll is one of the most popular preparations, with 7 PersonalPoints for a typical six-piece roll. Lighten it up: "You want to choose a roll that has whole fish. Anything that is chopped up means there is probably added fat," says Henderiks. Try a regular tuna roll and spice it up with wasabi to save some PersonalPoints.

Hand roll

Hand roll
According to Hiyakawa, many sushi connoisseurs end their meal with a hand roll (temaki), which is different mostly in its technique of construction, a chance for chefs to show off their craft. You're likely to get some artistic license with your tuna roll, including mountain potato or a dollop of fish roe.

Rainbow roll

Rainbow roll
"Of the specialty rolls, this is one of my favorites because it's everything sushi should be — pretty, appealing, and flavorful, with a variety of fresh fish," says Henderiks. One rainbow roll, often in eight pieces, will do plenty to fill you up, with 14 PersonalPoints for an 8-piece roll. Think of it as piling sashimi on your California roll.

Non-Sushi Alternatives

Udon noodles

Udon noodles
Unlike soba, udon are thick wheat-based noodles, usually prepared in a simple broth. "Make no mistake, you're eating a bowl of pasta," says Henderiks. Share these as a side, or get your noodle fix with a soba salad.

Tempura

Tempura
Consisting of vegetables and shrimp coated in light batter and deep-fried, a typical sampler of vegetable sticks and shrimp can quickly add up the PersonalPoints values.  Lighten it up: It might seem counterintuitive, but the vegetables are the biggest culprit in this dish. "They are like sponges and soak up the oil," says Henderiks.

Teriyaki chicken

Teriyaki chicken
A typical chicken breast, brushed with this sauce of sake, mirin, soy, and sugar is a good choice, with a value of 6 PersonalPoints for a 5 oz piece.  Lighten it up: You'll often see teriyaki accompanied by a cup of white rice, which adds 5 PersonalPoints. And, if that rice comes fried from the hibachi with a generous squirt of oil, it can add several more. Go for a side of broccoli and keep this sweet-and-savory dish in check.

Desserts

Mochi

Mochi
Golf-ball-sized ice cream wrapped in sweet rice dough, mochi goes beyond chocolate and vanilla, with flavors like green tea (matcha) and red bean (azuki). Because an order (often four pieces) is easily shared, mochi makes a good indulgence, says Henderiks. Take one for 4 PersonalPoints value and pass the plate.

Fresh fruit mitsumame

Fresh fruit mitsumame
A bowl of fresh strawberries or mixed fruit delivers a lot of satisfaction. You might also see it served as traditional mitsumame, a fruit salad with red beans and agar, a sort of seaweed-based Jell-O that is high in fiber with almost no calories. This is a very traditional dish and a refreshing end to a sushi meal.

*Given that ingredients, cooking methods and portion sizes can vary greatly among restaurants, all PersonalPoints values for restaurant dishes are estimates.

Best Bets:

What are the best choices?
When it comes to sushi, preferences vary widely. When you add the nutritional and environmental implications, sushi dining becomes a very personal choice. Here are some quick pointers to help you make the most informed choices.

Sushi and Sashimi

Salmon (left) earns big points for being as likeable as lox. And it has bountiful omega-3 fatty acids, known to boost heart health. Mackerel (center) is nutritionally similar and considered a good pick for sustainability. With their sweet flavor, scallops (right) are a great choice, especially when farm-raised. They offer a hearty dose of omega-3s, Vitamin B12, magnesium and potassium. Other similar picks: arctic char, sablefish, aka black cod.

These picks lack the omega-3 potency of the Best Picks, but are still good choices. Shrimp  (left) offer pure protein with little risk of mercury and other heavy metals. Ebi are always cooked, so this sushi is similar to shrimp cocktail. Giant clam  (center) is similar in taste and texture to conch, yet more sustainable than that long-lived snail. White tuna (right) is usually albacore  tuna. Other similar picks:  squid, cuttlefish

As you might have guessed, some of the most delicious fish are also the most controversial choices, in terms of both health and sustainability. Bluefin  tuna (left) is the prime example, for the reasons mentioned in "Know Your Tuna." Environmentalists also frown upon eating fresh water eel  (center), or unagi, which is diminishing in the wild. Hirame, which includes fluke  (right), halibut and sole, all have issues of sustainability. Other

Sushi Rolls

At just 4 PersonalPoints per roll, this likable California roll (left) is one of the safest choices, delivering the benefits of lean protein from surimi, omega-3s from avocado, and a tasty topping of flavorful sesame seeds or fish roe. The cucumber roll (right), has among the lowest PersonalPoints values on the menu, with 3 PersonalPoints value. These low-cal vegetarian rolls make a good follow-up to sashimi for a filling meal.

These rolls include poorer cuts of high-quality whole fish, which is why you're better off enjoying these fish varieties as nigiri sushi instead (not rolls). Sushi gives you more fish and less rice, which cuts the PersonalPoints value. Instead of having the shrimp roll , you could enjoy more shrimp by ordering shrimp sushi. Standbys like tuna roll (right) have 3 PersonalPoints. Other similar picks:  salmon roll, Yellowtail roll.

The shrimp tempura roll (left) isn't even a Japanese creation. One roll equals 500 calories and about 10 PersonalPoints. Made with deep fried softshell crab, the spider roll (right) is fast-food in disguise, with 11 PersonalPoints. Other similar picks:  A Philadelphia roll (salmon with cream cheese) delivers similarly high PersonalPoints value thanks to sweet and fatty additions.

During this meeting, our designer will also discuss what you're looking for in your new kitchen or bathroom. Including style, cabinet layout, and any other specifics you may want integrated into your project.

Then, our designer will create the layout of your project depending on your budget. Once the layout is complete, we'll schedule a meeting at the showroom where we'll present the layout and budget. Finally, once everything is agreed upon and all of the necessary forms are sign, we'll hand the layout and details over to your contractor.

Design with Our Contractor

This process is the same as the "Just Design" process, except we'll provide the build process if you don't already have a contractor in place.

How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Cabinets

CC0/Skitterphoto/Pixabay

Buying kitchen cabinets seems like an easy task. Whether you're replacing those that are already in your kitchen or you're restyling the kitchen totally, you need to consider a style that will look great and function well for a long time. High-quality cabinets can last up to 50 years. That's unlikely though given how often other parts of the kitchen need replacing. The average tap lasts 15 years, most sinks are replaced within 10 years, and the range cooker will need to be changed after 15 years so a full kitchen makeover every 10 to 15 years makes sense for most homeowners.

Resurface and Restore

When considering a new kitchen, it makes sense to give some thought to resurfacing the existing cabinets. Making them look new and making sure they fit into the new d?cor is the cheapest way of updating your tired kitchen but is it worth it? There are some cabinets that you can and probably should restore and there are others that you should break up and throw away. Any water damaged cabinets or cabinets that are hard to access need to go. If the layout, size, and functionality of the cabinets are fine, resurface them.

Cabinets

The cabinets are the first item people see in a kitchen. There are far more of them than anything else and they set the standard. If they're old and worn out, guests will expect the cooker and the sink and every other appliance in the space to match. The cabinet door's style is the most important decision when remodelling a kitchen. Do you go for a modern look like a slab face design or a classic like a recessed square pattern?

Wood Type and Colour

The type of wood your cabinets are made out of and their colour also plays a major part in the kitchen's overall design aesthetic. An ornate dark cherry wood could be right for you if you'd like a rich grain with occasional small pin knots. This type of wood gives a timeless feel. What about a white to cream coloured maple? This hardwood is readily available and easy to work with. You could opt for walnut as that allows you to go for cabinets in a range of colours from creamy white to dark brown.

Function or Form?

Cabinets need both form and function and you have a lot of choices. You could opt for shelves or drawers under your countertop for either practical or aesthetic reasons. What about quietly closing drawers that self-close when one inch from closing? Would that make life a little easier for those people who forget to close drawers and always walk into them? What about the sorts of people who slam their drawers shut? A self-close system could make like a little quieter.

How Organised?

If you're always in the kitchen, then the place has to have your stamp on it. You need things to hand. You need the place laid out to your specifications. You need everything organised so you can reach out and get what you need while you're cooking. What about installing a utensil pantry pull-out need the oven? You could also include a wall message centre within the kitchen's design to help you remain organised. In most homes, a kitchen is both a workspace and a social area for the family to catch up. Your kitchen and its cabinets should reflect that.

Luxury White Master Bathroom Ideas

Luxury White Master Bathroom Ideas

These master bathroom ideas will help turn your main washroom into a remedying oasis.

Main bathrooms are increasingly becoming so much more than a functional space. They are a retreat from a busier-than-ever household, a space where a renewed respect for cleanliness can be indulged, and progressively a design outlet onto which to project personality-filled bathroom ideas.

'Master bathrooms are getting a major upgrade at the moment, with a real focus on creating a special and inviting space that we want to spend time in,' says Lee Thornley, Founder of Bert + May.

'As many of us spend more time at home, the need for a place of calm to 'switch off' has become pressing,' adds Emma Joyce, Communications Manager at Victoria + Albert Baths. 'We've seen a return to the idea of the long, indulgent soak.'

Master bathroom ideas

From doubled-up fixtures and fittings to stunning statements bathtubs, experts share both the classic and modern master bathroom ideas that will make your daily soak a true joy.

1. The time is right for bold color

A master bathroom with blue walls, a red freestanding tub with a red and white striped shower curtain, and a red and white checkered floor

Neutrals may help induce a sense of calm but if that's just not your style, prioritise creating a room where you feel comfortable.

Master bathrooms are increasingly becoming a space where homeowners are looking to express character and, for those with bolder tastes, that means embracing bright bathroom color schemes.

'There's been an increase in use of color and pattern, with our customers really embracing the design challenge of making a scheme that feels exciting and that reflects their personality,' says Thornley.

In the bathroom picture shown above, the design dives into a contrasting combination of red and blue, accented with playful white stripes and checkered floors.

2. For bathrooms with freestanding tubs, think in 3D

An example of master bathroom ideas showing a central freestanding tub, traditional brass fittings and a green marble double vanity

Choosing a freestanding bathtub is the ultimate master bathroom centerpiece but remember that it's a design choice that will need the rest of the room to follow suit.

'You must keep in mind that you can see all around it,' says James Lentaigne, Creative Director at Drummonds. 'This means that you need to take a 3D approach to the bathroom layout.

'Scale your bath according to the space available and make sure that you have plenty of room all around it, even when other pieces, such as basins and loos, have been put in place. You want to be able to see it from all angles and for the whole room to feel spacious.'

3. Double vanity basins don't have to be bulky

A master bathroom with a white marble double vanity and pink tiled walls and floor

A double vanity is an opulent addition to a large master bathroom, celebrating abundant space.

But if the thought of two sinks conjures ideas of large, boxy sideboards, think again. In this room, the elegant bathroom vanity idea is pared back with open space below the sinks, making its addition dainty, not dominating.

'Double vanities create the perfect centrepiece for a master bathroom,' says Lentaigne. 'One of the joys of classically-inspired bathroomware is that it has beautiful proportions, which lend themselves well to being scaled down.'

3. Choose smaller marble tiles for a contemporary look

A walk-in shower with emerald marble tiled walls and flooring and brass fittings

Marble has had quite the Renaissance in recent years but if you want it to work seamlessly in a modern bathroom, think small.

Large panels lend true luxury, but smaller tiles of the stone or even marble-effect porcelain are more adaptable, accessible and absolutely on trend.

In this walk-in shower idea, emerald green tiles display the amazing variety of patterns and tones to be found in the stone. Look out also for tiles in unusual,  tessellating shapes for a really unique look.

'We have recently introduced a collection of white, pink and green marble tiles in square and herringbone shapes, encouraging our customers to play with the marbling pattern in combination with the tile shape, which has had some stunning results,' says Thornley.

4. Let the light in

An example of master bathroom ideas showing a white bathroom with a vaulted, beamed ceiling, painted all-white with a brass and a contemporary chandelier

The bathroom trend towards big and bright has been applied to more than just color.

'Space and light are the hallmarks of a luxury bathroom,' says Joyce. 'Many homeowners have increased the size of their master bathroom in recent years to create a greater sense of sanctuary and comfort.'

This white bathroom has really made the most of a large space and stunning vaulted ceiling by going all white. With comparatively small windows, an all-white paint scheme allows the light to bounce around the room and brighten every corner.

5. Statement tubs aren't just for big bathrooms

'People often associate freestanding baths with huge bathrooms but this doesn't have to be the case,' says Barry Crutchie, Design Director at BC Designs.

'Several of the best-selling models on the market are available in a smaller footprint; around the same size of a standard sized shower.'

'We've also seen some really clever use of space and position of baths. If you have recently converted a loft, often there is limited space under sloping roofs. This can be the perfect opportunity to add a freestanding bath under the eaves, maximizing space that was otherwise unusable.'

6. Go maximalist with patterned walls

An example of master bathroom ideas showing a bathroom with a large landscape mural, black metal shower cubicle and a vanity

Bringing in color to a bathroom is one thing, but combine that with an audacious print, and you have yourself a very voguish washroom.

'Maximalism is very much on-trend with more and more people experimenting with bold patterns and bright colors,' says Lentaigne.

'Bathrooms are one of the few places in the house where you can get away with strong, vivid tones which might be over-the-top in other rooms.'

This spectacular bathroom wall idea features a bold landscape mural with contrasting blues, greens and reds, and employing minimal hardware gives it free aesthetic reign.

7. Trick the eye with luxury vinyl flooring

'When planning a bathroom, choosing the right flooring is crucial,' says Sarah Escott, Design Manager at Amtico.

'Not only does it have to complement the design aesthetic, but it also has to withstand the trials that come from water and humidity, while remaining easy to clean.'

The necessity for water-resistant bathroom flooring ideas does put limits on the materials you can use, but it doesn't have to limit your aesthetic.

'LVT [Luxury Vinyl Tile] is a fantastic option for the bathroom,' says Escott. 'The variety of designs available makes it possible to reproduce the look of wood and stone without the extra care that is needed with natural material.'

8. Double up on walk-in showers

An example of master bathroom ideas showing a walk-in shower with marble paneled walls, a freestanding white tub and glass shower panels

Doubling your vanity units seems like the ultimate master bathroom luxury – that is until you've doubled your showers.

This stylish wet room idea combines a freestanding bath with two showers in a comparatively small bathroom, all thanks to a clever layout.

A bath in the eaves gives way to showers at the taller point of the room and the walk-in nature of the showers, the positioning of the screens and minimal fittings means that two showers take up little more space than just one.

9. Bring the party with patterned floors

If patterned walls seem like too much of a headache first thing in the morning, turn your bathroom into a dance floor with underfoot motifs.

This ornate Mediterranean-style bathroom floor tile idea enlivens the largely white room.

'Using fun patterns and designs on the floor is a great way to add personality as it won't dominate the whole space, and can be combined with softer touches in the rest of the décor to prevent it becoming too overwhelming,' says Thornley.

10. Make sure your bath is comfortable for you

An example of master bathroom ideas showing a bathroom with a floor to ceiling window and an egg-shaped freestanding bath

'When choosing a new bath the main point to consider is comfort,' says Lentaigne.

'Even if you love the look of a bath, you will never fully enjoy using it if you find it uncomfortable. How do you usually bathe? Different shapes suit different positions, some baths are better for sitting upright and reading a book, and others have curved sides for you to lie back into.'

'If you can, get into the bath before you buy it!' adds Joyce. 'We showed two baths at the recent Design Week show at the Design Centre in Chelsea. Very different, yet opinion was divided as to which was the most comfortable.'

11. Bring the outdoors in with natural motifs

A collective longing for the great outdoors has recently seen green paint colors, natural textures and organic motifs weave their way all over our homes.

The bathroom is no exception, where green tiling has grown in popularity and the maximalist trend has been dominated by natural print.

Here, a partially-paneled green bathroom is decorated above with a wallpaper filled with drawings of botanical specimens.

12. Enhance a fitted bath with on-trend tiles

'While a freestanding bath is normally at the top of everyone's list, a standard fitted bath can be just as interesting when it comes to bathroom design, particularly if you decide to dress it up with tiles,' says Crutchie.

'There are plenty of options in how to dress up a fitted bath and the enclosed casing is the perfect canvas to have fun. You can either choose to blend it seamlessly by continuing your tiles on the panel or create an even bigger focal point by contrasting the tiles.'

What should I put in my master bathroom?

The master bathroom is the washroom where you can go all out - double vanity units, freestanding baths, luxurious walk-in showers (not one, but two) all have their place here.

But what you really need to make sure you have in your bathroom is enough space to allow whatever pieces you choose to breathe.

'The size of the space will determine what pieces will fit into the room and will impact the layout you choose for your bathroom', says Lentaigne.

'Make the most of the space available and think about how the bathroom is used – for example should it include one basin or two? Does it need both a bath and a shower? Or just a bath or a shower?

'Decide in advance how the room should feel – is it a relaxing sanctuary or functional shower room – and then choose materials and products that reflect that feeling.'

'Examine the space you currently have and how well you are using it,' advises Crutchie.

'Consider if you are getting the most from your walls, or if unused items are taking up valuable floor space. Take a look at the windows in the room – often, this is an awkward place to fit washbasins or WCs. Could your bath go under the window?'

I started out at British GQ, where a month of work experience turned into 18 months of working on all sorts of projects, writing about everything from motorsport to interiors, and helping to put together the GQ Food & Drink Awards. I then spent three years at the Evening Standard on the GO London team, covering restaurants and bars, and getting to eat and drink a veritable smorgasbord of wonderful things around the city. I left the paper in 2020 and went freelance, writing about food, drink and homes for publications including Conde Nast Traveller, Luxury London and Departures. A little less than a year later, I started at Homes & Gardens as a Digital Writer, allowing me to fully indulge my love of good interior design.
